For thousands of years, humans have used stones in their burial rituals and traditions, whether to cover a deceased body, to mark a burial site for later orientation, or to commemorate the dead, as in the Jewish tradition of placing stones on Jewish graves. Borrowing from the modern form of Chinese tombstones and the 19th-century Constantinople gravestones, which are crowned with flowers, as well as the linguistic root of ruin (English “ruin”, French “ruine”, German “ruine”, and Danish “ruinere”), which derives from the notion of falling, and is therefore always associated with the idea of a falling stone. The implied idea of the tombstone as a ruin refers primarily to the architectural remains of a stone structure inhabited by a person after death. By evolving these sculptural forms into contemporary contexts, the visual language is used to search for images related to "ruination" and "fragmentation," and to discover the different historical, cultural, artistic, and technological possibilities of each of these images. The work will explore the different historical, cultural, artistic and technological possibilities of these images.
